1. Draw a Venn diagram of overlapping circles to show similarities and differences between bison and buffalo.

2. Buried treasure! Go on a picture scavenger hunt. Find: an antler hat rack,barbed wire, a barn, cowboy boots, a cowboy hat, a fence, a gate, a harness, a license plate, a row of old bottles, a picture frame on a bedroom wall, a pasture, pine trees, a propane tank, a ranch brand, a tackle box, a flashlight, a ladies purse, a rearview mirror, a pet’s water dish, a buffalo head nickel, two dish towels, bubbles, a backpack with letters, a watering hose, a camera, a bridge.
3. Make a diorama from three layers of colored construction paper: Blue, brown, green—curve the layers of paper and staple. Cut out figures of trees, bison, lakes, clouds, etc. to make a scene of the buffalo refuge on pages 5 and 31.
4. Make an adorable baby buffalo bank (click here for pattern and instructions).
5. Take large sheets of white butcher paper and tape them together. Measure the size of an adult bison with a yardstick and ruler. Cut it out and tape it up in your classroom.

6. Start a word chart of new words from the story. Add them to a list on the bulletin board.
7. Make a KWAL chart: what I know, what I want to learn, what I learned.
8. Native Americans made many things from buffalo.

9. Vocabulary challenge! Do a word web on the blackboard:

10. Make a Nickel puppet using a lunch sack (click here for pattern). Use
sandpaper for the tongue.
11. Design a teepee with art on the side showing a buffalo hunt.
12. Make a picture frame using cardboard and homemade buffalo stencils.
Trace the buffalo on page 3 of the book to make a stencil.
