1. License Plate Fun: invent your own funny plates with numbers and letters. Look for plates from other states. Find those states on a map.
2. On a map put a colored dot on NY City and one on the state where you live. Measure how many miles are between them.
3. If you drove 500 miles in one day, about how many days would it take to drive from NY City to your city?
4. Newspaper clippings of Nickel went all over the world. Put a small piece of paper on a globe on Japan, Switzerland and Germany, some of the places where Nickel was in the newspaper.
5. On a blank map (click here) use tiny icons of buffalo to show where the buffalo roamed. Use www.nbabison.com for a map of 1870. What states did the buffalo roam in?
6. See the tunnel under I-70 on pages 23 and 30. The herd is in Colorado at Exit 254 on I-70. Find a map and trace I-70 on it. What states does I-70 go through? How would you get to I-70 from where you live?
7. The buffalo compound on page 24 is named Elkatraz. This is a pun named after a famous prison. What is a pun? Find the prison on a map.
8. Bison were brought from Yellowstone (page 32). Find Yellowstone Park on a map.
9. Find Colorado on a map. Then find Denver.
10. The foothills of the Colorado Rockies are on pages 4 and 5. What are foothills? How big are they? What is the difference between a foothill and a mountain? Find them on a map. What other states are the Rocky Mountains in?
11. People say howdy in the west (page 30). How do people say hi in other places in the US? In the world?
12. What is different about the scenery on pages 5, 29 and 30 from where you live? Name five differences.
13. Genesee Park is one of 28 Denver Mountain Parks. How many parks are in your city? What are their names? Why are parks important in a city?
